So 3G is finally in India provided by none other than BSNL and MTNL. Recently I got a connection too for my Samsung Star 3G and here’s how I connected my PC to the Internet using it.

Requirements:

BSNL 3G connection with a data recharge or a data top-up (in case of a data top-up your main balance should be more than Rs 50). See BSNL 3G tariff plans for more info

Samsung Star 3G phone (any other 3G compatible handset may be used but for this tutorial I have used a Samsung Star 3G)

Samsung PC Studio

Procedure:

1. Activate EDGE on your 3G USIM. Normally this is activated by default. If this is not the case, call BSNL customer care at 9400024365 and ask them to activate it.

2. Create a new connection profile with the following parameters:
Connection name: BSNL 3G
APN: bsnlnet
Keep the other parameters at default.

3. Make this profile your default one.

4. Fire up your mobile browser and see if you can surf the NET on your mobile phone.

5. If you can surf the NET on your mobile phone, you are all set to go.

6. Install Samsung PC Studio on your PC.

7. Connect your Samsung Star 3G to your PC and open PC Studio.

8. Your phone will be detected automatically.

9. Goto Widgets > Internet Connector.

10. Create a new connection there with the following settings:
Connection name: BSNL 3G
Country: Other
APN: bsnlnet
Leave the other parameters as it is.

11. Hit connect and Voila you are connected to the Internet!!!

Here’s the speed test results of BSNL 3G in Barrackpore, Kolkata, West Bengal:

compared to BSNL DataOne connection (500 Plus plan, speed upto 2MBPS):

BSNL advertises to provide speed upto 3.6MBPS but that varies depending upon distance from tower, network congestion and other factors. However, I got a satisfactory speed of above 2MBPS throughout the day.

Well that’s it, enjoy mobile broadband. And if you have any questions do feel free to ask!!!

How to join the coveted Infosys Technologies? Or in other words, how to become an Infoscion? Well here’s my tale on how I became an Infoscion.

The Preparation

The whole deal started somewhere around August-September 2009. Due to recession and NASSCOM’s new rule, not a single company had visited our college. So we started preparing at full speed. By we, I mean me and my two highly dedicated room mates. We finished aptitude from Arun Sharma’s CAT book and did some reasoning as well from TIME’s material. Note that at this point we weren’t preparing for any particular company. It was more of a generalized preparation for whatever company came first.

By the mid of November our preparations came to a halt for semesters were at the door step. Our end semester exams continued till the 9th of Jan 2010. At completion we started preparing for TCS immediately for our college had informed that TCS would visit campus soon. Unfortunately that was not to be. TCS got canceled with no confirmation from Infosys or any other company. We were depressed and dejected but we did keep our preparations on. At this point we did reasoning from RS Aggarwal and english from the same and GRE Baron.

We almost gave up hope when one fine day it was declared that Infosys Technologies Pvt Ltd is going to visit campus on the 3rd of Feb 2010 at GIET Gunupur.

D Day

Finally the D Day came: 3rd of February 2010. We were gathered (all 649 of us) at the college auditorium for a pre-placement talk. Two guys from Infosys came and gave a really wonderful presentation. For a company this big, the really cool and easy going attitudes of its HR’s was a welcoming touch. After the presentation, we were taken to separate halls for the written round. Each room was guarded by a person from Infosys.

We were given a form to fill up consisting of details about our marks, address, etc along with a photograph. After that the reasoning question paper was served. It consisted of 30 questions to be completed in 30 minutes. There was no negative marking. After completion of this round, the english paper was given. It consisted of 25 questions to be completed in 30 minutes. And that marked the end of the written round.

The results came out after about two hours. It was displayed on notice boards and also announced at the auditorium. I took a breath of relief when I saw that my name was also there along with some of my friends. After the written round began the interview round. My turn came at around 9:30 PM. I was really nervous since this was my first PI and that too for a company like Infosys. I must have looked nervous while waiting outside the interview room, for one of the Infosys guys assured me that the HR’s were very friendly and its a pleasure to talk with them. And so it was. The interview went on great. I was asked a lot on my projects, my weaknesses, etc. It was a normal interview, nothing out of the ordinary.

Finally at 10:40 PM the results were announced. Out of the 149 selected in the written round, 104 were selected in the PI round. When my name was announced it was sheer ecstasy and utter disbelief. It was like I was in a trance. Mr. NS Tarun, the really cool HR who gave us our pre-placement talk earlier, showed a really cool video of Mysore where we are going to have our training. And finally after that, we were allowed to leave and spread the joy to our family and friends.

So that’s the story of how I became an Infoscion. And I am positive that you can too. So get cracking and see you all at Mysore.

And here’s the lot from GIET who made it through:

Symbols Definitions

Operation – An operation occurs when an object (i.e. product, document, etc.) is intentionally changed in any of its physical or chemical characteristics, assembled or disassembled from another object, or staged for another operation, transportation, inspection or storage. Operations also occur when information is transmitted or received or when planning or calculations take place.

Manual Operation - Is sometimes used to denote operations that are done manually.

Inspection, Verification or Measurement – An inspection, verification or measurement happens when an object is examined for identification or is verified for quality or quantity in any of its characteristics. The symbol also indicates that a decision must be made.

Decision Making/Approval – The diamond, typically used for document or software processes, also represents a decision or an approval point. Typically, if yes, the task sequence flows to the right, if no, it flows to the left. Descriptions for the operation are sometimes simply Approved? or O.K.?

A delay occurs to an object when conditions, except where intentional changes to the physical or chemical characteristics of the object do not require immediate performance of the next planned step.

Storage – A storage occurs when an object is kept and protected from unauthorized removal. The symbol on the left typically indicates inbound goods. When the triangle is inverted, it typically represents storage or filing.

Transportation – A transportation occurs when an object is moved from one place to another with the exception where such movements are a part of the operation or are caused by the operator at the work station during an operation and/or inspection / verification / approval.

Operation & Inspection (a.k.a. Combined Activity) – When two activities are performed at the same work station or concurrently, the symbols can be combined. The combined operation and inspection tasks are typically “combined”.

Connector – This symbol shows continuation of the flow chart from one page to another or from a decision diamond to another page or process. When you reach the bottom of the page or need to jump to another page, draw a flow chart connector symbol and connect it to the last item on the chart. Label the inside of the symbol with a letter, typically beginning with an “A” and page number where the process continues. I.E. The label points to point A on Page 2. When the process continues to another page, draw another flow chart connector symbol at an appropriate location. Label the symbol with the same letter and the page number where it continues. On page 2 in this example, the label would be to indicate the process was continued at point A.

An alternate symbol also used is in more complex flowcharts is the Off Page Connector where the numbering convention is like that of the connector described above, however, the Connectors are assigned node numbers (i.e. node A1 is where one segment of a flow stops and another node A1 would be where another flow shown at a different location on the flowchart starts). The Off Page Connector is then used to show that the flow is on a different page.

After numerous modifications and bug fixes we presented the same as our 7th semester minor project as well. It can be a real handy tool for day to day clipboarding activities. So go ahead and give it a whirl. By the way, we have also included the source code.
